CUBO+

Raising the next generation of developers

A conversation with Mario Flamenco

The Bitcoin Law did more than open the door for national and individual financial sovereignty. It also gave our nation the chance to create fresh opportunities for Salvadorans.

Mario, Director of the CUBO+ program at the National Bitcoin Office, knows this firsthand. He completed its very first course, when there were only seven students. “Now we teach classes to more than three hundred students a year,” he says:

“We’re creating an ecosystem in El Salvador to nurture our youth into the leaders of tomorrow’s world.”

No previous experience or qualifications are required to apply. All you need is a passion for learning and a curiosity to explore uncharted territory. The course generally targets students aged twenty to thirty, but even if you don’t fall into that category, there’s space for you. “We’ve had students as young as fourteen and as old as… we just don’t ask,” Mario explains with a smile.

The CUBO+ program is divided into two sections. The Econ Generation focuses on why Bitcoin was created—both philosophically and economically—building a solid foundation for those seeking a career in business. The Tech Generation dives into how Bitcoin actually works, providing advanced technical knowledge that extends as far as the Lightning Network, and even teaches students how to code. Those who excel are invited to summer schools and boot camps abroad, opening doors to global opportunities.

“Some of our most successful students are now working for the most prestigious Bitcoin companies in the world.”

The CUBO+ program has grown quickly since its inception. In fact, much of the CUBO+ team consists of alumni. Early 2025 saw the launch of CUBO+ AI, a new course covering another transformative technology: artificial intelligence. With this program, Mario explains, “We aim to get the best and brightest and give them all the tools they need to succeed in a new industry that is going to revolutionize the future. Some of our most successful students are now working for the most prestigious Bitcoin companies in the world, ”there are now Salvadoran students studying abroad in China and visiting Switzerland and Japan for education and work. Speaking directly to the youth of El Salvador, Mario declares, “I want you to know that you have the responsibility to follow your dreams. In the new El Salvador this is now possible, so you have the obligation to go for it.”
