Seafood, Sunsets, and Connection
Coavana Seaside Kitchen, located inside Puro Surf Hotel on Bitcoin beach, serves up some of the best and freshest Salvadoran and international cuisine in El Zonte and tops them off with complimentary sunset vistas.
Surfing is a huge part of life in the Puro Surf Hotel—and in El Zonte—and the town’s surf culture flows on through to Covana Seaside Kitchen, where, as Food and Beverage Manager Roberto puts it, “the energy is pure surfer energy; great vibes and a super laid-back atmosphere with ocean views.”
Covana Seaside Kitchen is open all day, with a menu that features an extensive selection of coffees, juices, and smoothies to ensure those focusing on their time in the waves are fully fueled and ready to ride. “The vibe here is all about surfing,” Roberto explains, “It’s full of super-friendly people and great energy.”
But the focus isn’t just on fostering times outside of the restaurant. Covana, as detailed by Marketing Manager Andrea, “combines fresh cuisine with a dining experience inspired by the energy of the coast and El Salvador.” A range of craft beverages is also on offer for those looking to kick back in Covana’s relaxing atmosphere and watch one of El Zonte’s famous, ocean-bound sunsets.
The menu at Covana features Salvadoran staples, some with an international twist, alongside global classics with a Salvadoran spin. “Everything is super fresh, practically caught that very day,” explains Executive Chef Onan Valencia.
When asked about his favorite and most popular dishes on the menu, Chef Onan settles on “the Bitten Fish. It combines the freshness of beets with the flavor of the fish and is absolutely delicious. However, the Sea and Land burger is a close second.”
Covana Kitchen has been operating for almost a decade, and keeping up with the times is crucial for any restaurant. Andrea explains how in September 2021, as El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, Covana Kitchen chose to follow suit.
“El Zonte,” she says, “has always had a very strong identity centered around surfing and the beach community and, over time, Bitcoin has also become a very important part of that dynamic.”
Bitcoin has further allowed Covana to connect with a diverse group of visitors from all over the world, becoming a part of Bitcoin’s global ecosystem, “which is growing stronger and stronger in El Salvador,” adds Andrea.
When asked about the benefits he has seen Bitcoin bring to El Zonte, “truly massive” is the phrase Roberto chooses, telling us how the Bitcoin Beach initiative has provided greater international visibility for El Zonte and a huge boost to the tourism industry.
With the adoption of Bitcoin, improved security, and growing international reputation bringing more global visitors to El Salvador’s coastlines each year, Roberto finishes by telling us the overarching mission of Covana Seaside Kitchen: “to continue enhancing the experience that Puro Surf offers to people who come to explore El Salvador and to serve as a space that connects people from all over the world.”
